The medical staff at Health By Design practices a hands-on, personalized, patient-centered philosophy of patient care. Theirs is a new vision for treating patients - one in which they help patients keep healthy and prevent disease through early detection, patient assessment and education, and through management of obesity and other risk factors.

Health By Design has continually grown its medical staff and its programs to serve corporate and individual clients.

David M. Player, M.D.

Founder of Health By Design in 1982, Dr. Player received his medical training at the University of Illinois Medical School and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and subspecialty training in Nephrology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, where he served as chief resident in Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Player serves as a medical consultant to numerous businesses and corporate insurance plans. His special interests include diseases of the kidney, preventive medicine, and the integration of alternative medicine and conventional medicine into mainstream health care.

James W. Ogletree, M.D.

A Family Physician with special interests in sports medicine, exercise and preventive medicine, Dr. Ogletree joined Health By Design in 1990. He attended University of Texas-Austin and Texas Tech University and earned a degree in microbiology and an M.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed a Family Practice residency in San Antonio and was named Chief Resident during his last year. He is a Diplomate with the American Board of Family Practice, and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine from the same board. His special interests in preventive medicine include prevention of cardiovascular disease, cancer screening and the effects of exercise on disease processes.

Lawrence J. Hoberman, M.D.

A graduate of University of Nebraska with an M.D. from University of Nebraska, Dr. Hoberman completed an internship and medical residency at Indiana University Medical Center and a medical residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center (USAF). He completed a Gastroenterology fellowship at Southwestern Medical School-Dallas. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology.

Jennifer S. (Klauer) Retzloff, M.D.

A graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Retzloff earned an M.D. at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She did her Internal Medicine residency at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, and is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Randall M. Vanover, M.D.

Dr. Vanover is a board certified Internal Medicine physician who joined Health By Design in January of 2008. Dr. Vanover graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He subsequently attended Wayne State University School of Medicine where he received his medical degree, then moved to San Antonio where he trained at the University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center. Upon completion of internship and residency training, Dr. Vanover worked with a San Antonio emergency medicine group before opening his private practice in N.E. San Antonio in 1985. He currently maintains a part-time private practice with Northeast Internal Medicine Associates, and recently joined Health by Design, where his focus has shifted from care of chronic medical illness, to wellness and prevention.
